A Childhood Dream

A Childhood Dream

I once HAD a dream… But, reality woke me up

I once had a dream

I dreamt of being a princess in fairy tales. To have a happy ever after and have my story published so that all the kids will listen to my story.

But, reality woke me up.

That being a princess in a fairy tale and having a real life story are of polar opposites. Life would never give you a happy ever after; you work hard for it.

I once had a dream

I dreamt of being a doctor, to cure my family when they are sick, to be looked up to by people and earn lots of money.

But, reality woke me up.

That being a doctor takes more than a decade long study, that being a doctor means people’s lives is in your hands. The responsibility you have is too great, one mistake is all it takes to take a life.

I once had a dream

I dreamt of becoming a teacher, to teach those that thirst for knowledge, to impart my knowledge to those who seek for it.

But, reality woke me up.

That being a teacher, you must have all the patience in the world, that not everyone would notice and recognize your hard work, dedication and sacrifice.

I once had a dream

I dreamt of becoming a celebrity, to have the camera flash all on me, that everyone would know my name and see my image anywhere.

But, reality woke me up.

That being a celebrity, you must be aware of your every move, that fame could crush you and every value you have, that being a celebrity is like a ticking time bomb you could never predict what could possibly happen to you at the next second.

I once had a dream

I dreamt of becoming a soldier, to dedicate my life in serving the country, to hold a gun and use it in protecting my fellow countrymen.

But, reality woke me up.

That being a soldier, you must be prepared to die, that each battle could possibly be your last. That sometimes those that you protect would never be grateful of what you have given in protecting them, that your life relies on your will alone.

I once had a dream

I dreamt of being like my mother. To have kids and take care of them, to do the household chores, to cook food that satisfies my family, to have a loving husband that would wake me up with a kiss.

But, reality woke me up.

That being a mother was never easy. It entails a thousand of sacrifice, to budget the money, to have patience in taking care of children who would not listen to you, to have fights with your husband over simple matters to the most complicated ones, to sacrifice your whole time that was meant for yourself and yet have to offer to your family.

I once had a dream

I dreamt of being like my father. To earn  money, to bring my family in many places, have my morning breakfast prepared before I wake up, and be the strength of my family.

But, reality woke me up.

That being a father was never easy. You cannot complain when it’s hard because everyone relies on you, you could not shed a tear when you want because you have to be the strength, you cannot say “I quit” at work because you know your family would suffer.

I once had a dream

I dreamt that I successfully fulfilled my dream, that one day I’ll be whatever I want to be

But, reality woke me up.

That to reach that dream, I must work hard for it. Because I, I withhold my future. Although the road could be bittersweet, treacherous and confusing if I continue to strive for that dream I would be able to reach it one day.
